Yes - of course. I'm sure he was meticulous in the way he compiled the information - and I have my much thumbed copy at my elbow as I type. It's far more use than some volumes of RISM.

The problem is that once inaccurate information is in circulation it is impossible to eliminate it.

This does have implications for how we evaluate things from the past. How accurate is the information we have and so on. But that's too complex a topic for now I think.

Yes, that list has traveled around. If it is the same one. It
was really straight out of Brown. And not even the update
materials are complete.

I am now on my THIRD copy of Brown, the earlier copies were so
torn apart from use I have retired them. So I am quite aware of
where there are
errors, but so very, very few. Especially when you realize his
work is from the1960s. It's truly amazing, imho. The very first
volume of RISM appeared at that time, so he did not even have
access to that basic information until he was nearly finished.
In many
ways it is a masterpiece of music bibliography. Surely it must
stand among the top five or six books in that field. It really
should stand as a model for HOW to make a music bibliography. He
thought everything through.

We are really so very fortunate to have Howard's excellent work
at our disposal.

| Well - as a librarian I can assure you that it is impossible to
compile a
| bibliography or catalogue which is 100% accurate - or even 99%.
(I've
| tried). The point about Howard Brown's book is that it was
first published
| in 1965 - over 40 years ago and is somewhat out of date. It
would help if
| people gave their source of reference. I think that all the
information in
| the Appalachian list is from Brown.
|
| Actually Mudarra's 4-course music is the earliest surviving -
printed in
| 1547 whereas Barberiis was printed in 1549.
|
| The latest thinking on the 4-course music in Barberiis is that
it is for a
| small 4-course lute. The term Italian term "chitarra" is
somewhat
| ambiguous in the 16th century.
|
| Now I must away and watch the Lute Society taking part in
University
| Challenge on TV over here! Fingers crossed they get into the
semi-finals!
