        :help compl-generic

In pre-Vim7 versions, control+P in insert-mode still had the same
behavior of doing completion of the next/previously found item.
It just didn't have the visual "popup" display of it. I use it
all the time and have since Vim6.0 so the visual display of
what's coming next/previous is merely a nice addition. According to

        :help version5.txt

around line 815, this feature has been around since at least v5.

If you don't like it, there's no harm in doing something like

        :inoremap <c-p> <esc>

which will allow your fingers to drift and accidentally hit
control+P and still get the behavior of hitting control+[

There's also an option to control the max number of lines in the
popup:

        :help 'pumheight'

which might make it less annoying if you set it to 1-8 instead of
its default value of zero (which can overwhelm your screen). I
like about 8, but don't personally mind seeing all my options
most of the time.

Hope this gives you some options to work with...
