cd's to the directory that contains the file I'm editing. Does anyone know what's causing that or how I can turn if off?

In more detail, what happens is this. I type something like:
    vi /some/other/dir/filename
at the command line, and then when I'm in gvim, if I type:
    :pwd
I get:
    /some/other/dir
I'd rather just stay in the directory where I started gvim.

Sounds like you might have either an autocmd that
does this for you, or you have 'autochdir' set.

You can check this with

        :set autochdir?
        :autocmd

If it's the former, you may want to check where it was last set:

        :verbose set autochdir?
