And guess where they are actually stored? In vim process memory. In linux there 
is a special global variable that is manipulated by various *env functions (see 
“man getenv”, there is a “SEE ALSO” list at the bottom). AFAIR I saw direct 
manipulations of this global in zsh sources under some circumstances (*env 
functions not available: search for USE_SET_UNSET_ENV macros in zsh sources).

They are internal.
