I agree.  Using "Liberation Mono" with a GTK vim the thumbs up is displayed ok. 
 I know the behaviour, in my vim, f.ex. "ㄫ" which I get with vim's nG digraph, 
writes to four character cells altogether.

Scarcely relevant factoid, I used the thumbs up recently in an SM on my Samsung 
S3 phone, and the recipient on a Sony couldn't render it.
