Thank _you_ for your replies.

OK.  I was using Snapshot 43.
I discarded 43, then downloaded and installed Snapshot 44 and got the  
same behavior.

I then downloaded MacVim-7_2-stable-1_2 and, again, got the same  
behavior.

I'm again wondering if I inadvertently did something in my .vimrc  
or .gvimrc that is causing the problem.
