When I don't understand the plaintext, I may have a look at the email source but otherwise I won't open any attachment. PDF and zip being binary formats, they are sent in base64 content-transfer-encoding, which means there's no way for me to tell if the attachment is malicious witout opening it. In my reply to that Chinese post quoting me, I said in four languages that I don't understand Chinese. These are the four I can speak or write at a tolerable level without a dictionary. There are some additional ones through which I can puzzle my way when reading if not when writing.
