Frankly it's best to try things the Vim way for quite a long
while before customising it to what you are used to.

Andy gave you a short and long answer, but I prefer mapping
Space to clear search highlights and any status message as shown
in this tip:

I like scrolling around and seeing the search highlights (which
I couldn't with your method). It's no pain to press Space (or \h
as Andy suggested) to clear highlights when finished with them.
