Of course mixing is fine. Keep in mind that VAM supports dependencies.
Eg snipmate will try to reinstall tlib,vim-addon-mw-utils etc. Thus
consider removing those dependencies from your ~/.vim then.

btw expanding def gives that error and then I end up with:
def fname():
def
instead of
def fname():
