AFAIK PRAM battery failure always results in a dark screen. The OP is getting the flashing question mark so it's not that. You could try a PRAM zap (Command/Apple-Option-P-R just after the bong). Your disk may be on the edge (one side or the other) of failure. Try doing a reset, aka, three fingered salute (Control-Command/Apple-Power Key) after you get to the flashing question mark. Sometimes failing drives don't spin up in time.
