Sometimes a hard shutdown mucks up the works and the machine forgets which
system folder it's supposed to look for. Unplug the machine and take out the
PRAM battery for 30 minutes or more. Check the date on the battery - if it's
even close to stock buy another one (or several if you're intending on
messing about with old Macs). I use a multimeter to eke the last life out of
old battery pulls - it's paid for itself a few times over.

If pulling or replacing the battery doesn't work, try a bootable floppy with
System 7.1 - 7.6.1.

If that doesn't work, do a custom "universal" install on a hard drive on
your other Performa (I would be more specific if I knew which Performa you
had) and try booting that on the CCII.

If neither of those options work I guess we have an interesting problem on
our hands. Keep me posted. There are many here with far more expertise on
this subject and I look forward to their input. - Mike
