You are as ambitious as I wish I was.
What I have done in the past is copy the "drive" from older  machines
to my most "modern" Mac, and then burn that info to a CD or DVD. I have
had no real problem, except that I have run into a few instances where
I ended up with a couple of files created with applications that will
not run on the most up to date operating systems. Nothing of real
"value" so it has not really been a problem.

I am not sure what you mean by "magneto-optical storage" but I would
give a thought to burning the info to CDs or DVDs as you are more likely
to have drives in the future that can read the media.
