The 40SC is a "block addressable" tape. With the original Retrospect which came with the drive, you could "mount" the tape and then access it as if it was a disk drive. The later Retrospect uses the drive conventionally. The drive is actually a 3M drive, which 3M abandoned shortly after it was introduced. The A/UX software for the WGS95 was originally distributed on 40SC tapes.
