I have used case crackers before to spread the case open at the seam but
find they easily damage the plastic (years of grim holding it together) so
what I normally do is hold onto the computer tightly at the sides and face
down over a couch and use quick downward force like I am going to slam it
into the couch but stop suddenly before contact and the weight of the
insides can be enough to pop the back off. I have not damaged any Mac's
doing this but try at your own risk of course.
