I can't say absolutely, but I believe it will boot without a battery
if everything else is OK.

The size of hard drive should not make a difference (within reason),
but there are other considerations. What type of hard drive? How are
the jumpers configured? Is there a useable OS on the drive?

The Classic unique in that it contains a boot image in ROM. If you
hold down command-option-x-o at startup, it should boot into System
6.03. You might give that a try to isolate other problems.
