Hi I have a Mac 512ke (with a 400k/800k drive added) along with a slew of more recent machines, the oldest being a Pismo and the second oldest a Macbook Pro from about 2006. I have a 5300cs that I kept around for the express purpose of reading the old 400/800/1.4mb floppies and then moving them onto a new system (somehow, probably by an ethernet card) but alas, the 5300 died a strange death the other day (8 odd tones at startup and then nothingness). I have an ethernet card for the card for the 5300 (Global Village Powerport Platinum Pro) so I was hoping that if the 5300 could handle all those formats, I could use it as the 'bridge' to move the data from the floppies to my newer systems.
So I'm looking at disk conversion services for the 20-30 diskettes, but then got to thinking is there a machine on Ebay that could serve as a good 'bridge'? Was the 5300, with an ethernet connection, the right machine for the job? Or should I get an internal Superdrive floppy drive for the Pismo (does it read 400/800/1.4mb?). Or maybe I should step back to a slightly older machine?
