I completely agree. KDE has always been slow for me, and totally unacceptable for use as a desktop for anything worthwhile doing...with that being said, Ubuntu is based on GNOME, which I find more usable in my daily use on my 6 Virtual Machines (hosted on a Core i7 processor [thats 8 logical 'processors'] and 6GB ram) and my other misc computers. I fell out of the PowerPC stuff after my iBook died, along with my Intel Mac Mini last year. I'd like to get back again, but haven't been able to find a decent deal on any PPC stuff.
I ran Xubuntu (based on the XFCE interface, slightly less-usable than GNOME, but much less demanding) on my iBook and Ubuntu on my G3/500 and my G4.
