There are still a number of PDP-8's in service (12 bit), as I understand, and even more 11's . . . And some PDP-10 compatibles are still sold (36 bit). Not all manufacturers used "byte" as a synonym for "word," however. IBM used it for other sizes along the way. a.f.c would be a good place to find this; it comes up repeatedly. Search with dejanews^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H google groupss. 4 bits used to be commonly referred to as "nibbles". I suggested at one point that 16 should be a "mouthful" and 32 a "stomach ache" :) [64 wasn't conceivable at the time :)] -- These opinions are mine.
