Might just be the connector needing cleaned. To do that you have to take the 
Mac apart then disconnect and reconnect the speaker a few times.

How much RAM does it have? If only one meg, you'll have some fun finding an 
upgrade board. If it has 2 meg then it has the upgrade board with 30 pin SIMM 
slots to add another 2 meg. Early RAM upgrade boards had all SIMM sockets for 3 
meg, then Apple changed to soldering 1 meg to the upgrade board.
