I would guess that it might be possible that the hard drive simply
failed. However that you get a similar result with the floppy suggests
that that is unlikely. It might be possible to fry the board with the
battery, but I don't know. Just make sure you've got it in right and
test again. Double check all the cabling and try a few other floppies
if you have them (with and without the hard drive connected).
