I can share your pain.
My gradeschool had a bunch of PM6100\66 machines donated... they were all "Upgraded" with 9.x, but everything else was stock. It was TERRIBLE to try to get anything done with them... which explains why they're now covered in a massive pile of other unwanted stuff.

Thank you for setting the record straight. I'm constantly amazed at just how flexible the definition of "vintage" seems to be on this list. :)

I don't know if the OP has, at long last, gotten OS 9 installed on their 8100 yet, but they may want to talk to these folks:

...to see if it's even worth the effort.

I don't recall them specifying which exact model of 8100 they had, but as near as I can tell, the last model of 8100 ran at 110MHz. I've played with a PB 1400 (running at a blazing-fast 117MHz!) that had OS 9 loaded and, though it's been a while, I recall being rather thankful that it wasn't an experience I had to undergo daily as a hapless end user. :/

Granted, the 1400 suffers from a low RAM ceiling (64 MB) that the 8100 doesn't, but you get the idea: the OP could benefit from running an earlier OS. There was also, IIRC, some question as to whether 9.0.4 or 9.1 offers greater system stability for legacy hardware; some folks reported fewer freezes under the former than the latter.

Anyway, if the OP is bound and determined to run a flavor of OS 9 on a PM 8100, they may want to have a word with the 1st Powermacs folks to work out the best way to optimize the experience. [shrugs]

Best,

James Fraser
