a long time ago i had a Performa 638CD (not sure what the difference was between models?)
it had a 500MB IDE hard drive and a SCSI CD. came with something like 24 or 32 megs of memory. i had two 64MB SIMMs that i stuck in the slots for a total of 128MBs. took forever to cold boot due to the memory check at power-on. i had 8.1 running on it with an Ethernet card; it went online, very slowly though, with iCab i had used the Basilisk emulator on a PC to install the 'system' onto a 500 megabyte hard disk image which was later dumped to the Performa's hard drive while mounted in a PC using a disk image utility called WinImage. when placed back into the Performa it booted right up. i had also one time, just for fun, tried to format an 80GB IDE hard drive in the Performa, using the System 7 Network Access disk. i let it alone overnight and it wasn't done initilizing the next morning so i killed it and put back the old drive. oh well On Wed, Apr 7, 2010 at 11:21 PM, tortoise <[email protected]> wrote: > > > On Apr 7, 3:35 am, [email protected] wrote: > > It will run an 8.1; > > http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_performa/stats/mac_performa. > .. > > mine does, but has and needs full memory (36MB) with Virtual Memory > turned on. > > > I have mine running 8.1 with a 128MB RAM card, however it will run > with 20MB and VM off. > 32 is better, of course, still don't have to have VM. > > on 68k unlike powermac VM doesn't save you RAM, it just lets you run > more apps at the same time, that is all. > > > Lars>> Hello ,I did work on those Performa it is a long time and if my > memory > > >> serves me well I'm almost sure that computer does not accept more than > 7.5. > > >> It is not an issue of memory , and you may have problems reinstalling > the > > >> hard disk drivers. > > >Mine is certainly runnin` MacOS 8.0E (Spanish edition) without a hitch. > Can > > >provide photos :-) > > > > >Gorka > > -- > ----- > You received this message because you are a member of the Vintage Macs > group. > The list FAQ is at http://lowendmac.com/lists/vintagemacs.shtml and our > netiquette guide is at http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/netiquette.shtml > To post to this group, send email to [email protected] > To leave this group, send email to > [email protected]<vintage-macs%[email protected]> > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/vintage-macs > > Support for older Macs: http://lowendmac.com/services/ > > To unsubscribe, reply using "remove me" as the subject. > -- ----- You received this message because you are a member of the Vintage Macs group.
