You can get the full 9 GB recognized in one volume provided the drive is not 
damaged and the termination is proper.

You would have to replace the SE ROM with a IIfx ROM or the rare IIsi ROM and 
install OS 8.1.

I have done this on a SE/30 connected to an old Seagate full-height 9 GB 
external drive that was formatted on a newer Mac.

There is (was?) info on how to do this on Gamba's website.  I don't know if the 
site is still up.

I found the SE/30 extremely slow running 8.1 but since it was only used as a 
iTunes server on a network with other more modern Mac's that was not an issue. 
Unfortunately that old HDD died and I took the SE/30 out of service. --glen
