Mac OS 8.1. You can use extended format on an 040 CPU Mac but not to boot from.
The only way standard Mac OS standard format write capability will get restored
to Snow Leopard is if someone who needs/wants it has the programming skills to
do it, then they'll likely have to keep patching it for every update to 10.6.x
because I'd bet a dollar Apple would specifically target such a 3rd party fix
to break it.
