This is a very common problem with the macplus. When I was just about to sell 
one back in 1987 it was doing the same thing. I sold it anyway but maybe should 
have fixed it had I known what the problem was. I found out years later that if 
you have the problem of screen shutdown it is the connectors on the analog 
board that supply high voltage to the crt. that are the issue. These are the 
very sturdy pins that connect the board to the crt. Best idea is to clean this 
area on the board and resolder the pins. Done this with a recently acquires 
macplus and all is fine.
