Well you can't decompress *.sit files on a PC, and if I remember correctly, not even on another mac - and then transfer them to the Macintosh. You have to install Aladdin... something on the Macintosh. I'm sure someone else will be able to remember the name of the program.
The reason for this is because up until Mac OS X, filename extensions didn't play much of a role in identifying a filetype. So when you alter the file on a newer computer, the older operating system and whatnot has no idea about how to handle the file. I'm not sure if the newer programs strip identifying information or what exactly happens. But, I know there's a program called CreatorChanger that can change the type identifier in an individual file. You might try that.
