I believe it will run without a battery. Go to an electronics or automotive supply store and buy a high grade electronics cleaner/contact cleaner that is plastics safe. It will neutralize the acid and remove it. Let it dry overnight and it should be good as new.
I do this frequently with production computer equipment and it works great!
