Is there a specific reason you're trying to use System 7.5.3? For the Macintosh PowerBook 1400 I would highly suggest running Mac OS 8.1. Mac OS 8.1 has more PowerPC native code in the OS than System 7.5.3; making it faster and more responsive on your machine. The only caveat being it consumes more RAM than older versions.
