This might be a stupid question, but are they supposed to be text files or are you just using the editor to look see what it is? And if so does it make a difference adding the .txt extension to help out OS X? Adding to Koralatov's reply, you can also just do $ cat OLD_MAC_FILE and it will spit the contents (binary, text, whatever) into the terminal.
