People have done it in the past, but in my opinion there are several disadvantages. The biggest is that soldering a capacitor with leads to surface mount pads creates a lever which can accidentally tear the pads off of the circuit board. Additionally, I find it more awkward to get the leads to lay flat on the pads than it is to just solder a surface mount cap in place. When soldering a surface mount cap in place: 1) first remove all the old solder from both pads with good desoldering braid such as chemtronics chemwik. 2) Thoroughly clean the area with alcohol, flux remover or other solvents. 3) Tin one pad of the two (only one). 4) Carefully position the capacitor in place on the pads. 5) Gently press down on the top of the cap with something like a flat blade screwdriver or the eraser a the end of a pencil or other blunt tool. 6) Apply a hot soldering pencil to the pad which you earlier tinned. Apply heat until that side of the capacitor sinks into the solder and rests flat on the pad. 7) Remove the soldering pencil. 8) After a few moments for the solder to harden, remove the tools pressing the top of the capacitor. 9) Solder the other terminal of the capacitor the way one normally would with pencil and solder. 10) Clean again.
