The IIsi (and the IIci) is weird with video. Apple's first attempt at
onboard video was a little shaky. It only takes certain kinds of monitors. I
found this out about three years ago when I had my first encounter with a
IIsi. I assumed - and I thought it was a fairly safe assumption - that any
Apple monitor would work with it. But no. So I too thought the onboard video
was dead. But as it turns out, you have to have a "sync-on-green" monitor
for it to work, and not all Apple monitors are sync-on-green.
