I presume then that it is a PowerMac floppy disk drive right? In which case you run into an itty bitty problem or two. There are two Mac floppy drive types ya see, the original (subtle, thin, graceful slot - like the IIci or the SE/30 for example) is the 'auto-inject' mechanism. This sucks the disk in after it passes the halfway point of insertion and is a very clever mechanical design, sadly prone to infestation by dust bunnies. The other is the type used on late 68ks (Q8x0, LC475 etc.) and PowerMac machines. This is 'manual inject' and does not make any attempts to take the disk in by itself, you practically have to cram the disk down it's throat before it drops into the drive, hence the huge ugly oval hole and gaping great big slot to get your fingers into. The crux of the problem is that, in usual circumstances, certainly in the LCs and the SEs, the two are not interchangeable due to slight physical difference in slot height. This means a new drive in an old Mac will suffer the problems you describe with drag 'cause the slots don't line up with each other properly on the case and the drive. Hey presto ;). You need to find another old auto inject drive, try LEM Swap. <OK, it seemed miraculous at the time....
