The resource fork is used in Stuffit only to create a self extracting archive. 
The code to do the extracting is really a classic application in the resource 
fork where it is expected - at least until the days of the Power PC.

But there have been continuing changes to the capabilities of Stuffit. It even 
does peecee style zip compression now. It's quite possible that some *.sit 
files have been created with features that cannot be read by any version of 
Stuffit that will run on OS 7.1. If you're compressing under BSD you should 
look for options regarding Stuffit version. If someone else compressed them you 
may well have to go there.

Stuffit has always just quietly quit for a file it doesn't understand.
