VERY light sanding - if it's plywood or veneered, you don't have far to go
to go right through it - but yes, to get any lacquer/varnish off...
experiment with a section that won't be visible... clean off the varnish
with light sanding, and experiment with a light bleach solution to get a
uniform color...now you're ready for the final finish...
