A person with basic mechanical skills, a few easy to find tools and access
to a qualified machine shop can do an excellent job of building his/her own
VW engine- particularly with the wealth of helpful videos and books
(Wilson's "How To Rebuild Your VW Engine").
It is doubtful that another person will be as careful as someone doing their
own work.
