I was thinking back to a few years ago when a local fella brought a VW Trike over to show me his new acquisition. He kept telling me it was an automatic and I figured it was a semi-automatic. Well, as it turned out, it reallly was an automatic transmission and the trike was made for a handicapped guy who couldn't operate a clutch. As it turns out, it used a 1500sp hooked to a fully automatic transmission which would have been or a Type 3.
What I was wondering is if anyone has ever managed to put a fully automatic transmission from a Type 3 in a Beetle? Since I believe the tranny was shifted via cable, fabricating a shifting mechanism wouldn't be hard at all. Then I would suppose there would be some axle length adjustments, etc. I think this would make a neat conversion.
