Good morning. If anyone is willing and able I have a grandson who is starting his sophomore year at ECU in Greenville, NC who may be in need of some non-VW automotive diagnosis assistance.
He has a 1994 Ford Ranger truck w/4.0L engine and 4WD. Apparently as he got there yesterday after driving with his mom from their home in Tampa his turn signals quit working. They checked the turn signal fuse and it was blown and they replaced it and that new fuse blew about 5 minutes later from what I understand. Hazard flashers work on both sides - front and rear. Turn signals don't work either side nor front nor rear. I asked them to adjust tilt steering wheel up and down to see if it was possibly a loose connection in multi-function switch on steering column. No luck. I think that the turn signals and hazards may be on different flashers but not sure. She is flying home today so he will be trying to diagnose this on his own. I told them that I think the signal flasher is under the driver's side dash so he will need to lie on his back with his head against the pedals and look up for the round (I think it is round) flasher and remove it and reinstall to see if it is just a loose connection OR maybe flasher is just bad and he needs to go to auto store and get a new one. Hopefully I will find out today what he finds. I also asked them to check all the other functions of the multi-function switch (high/low beams, etc.) to see if those functions work. No report back on that yet. In any event if there are any listees in the Greenville area who might be willing to help him diagnose this, please let me know. He may have no option but to take to Ford dealer but as they have already put a lot of funds into keeping this truck running I'm trying to explore some lower cost diagnostic alternatives. If it is the multi-function switch then I'd try to explore online the difficulty of removing the bad one and installing a new one rather than have dealer charge him an arm and a leg for parts and labor but we may have no choice as he doesn't need to be driving around without turn signals. Any advice and/or help would be most appreciated. If I were closer then I'd be right there but I'm in Alabama so that isn't an option right now. Thanks so much.
