MS Exchange is a product that let's companies or small businesses share
resources like calendars, email, contacts and so on. Many email clients
support Exchange, such as the mail app on the iPhone. Google also
maintains an Exchange server, so you can use an Exchange account to get
to Gmail. For example, I was using an Exchange account to handle my
Gmail, my Google Calendar and my Google Contacts. I was also using a
Google account to handle my email (IMAP), calendar and notes. I've
since, based on recommendations from this list, stopped using Exchange
for anything but synchronizing my Google Contacts. I use my Google
account to get to my email via IMAP and my Google Calendar (although I'm
not sure what protocol it uses for that).
