I don't know if you can view the step by step before starting the route, but if you tap start route, then tap more options, you will have an option that lets you view the steps of the route. This may be an option before actually tapping start route, but I am not sure of this. If not, you can follow the steps above and just do it well before you actually want to start your route. Perhaps someone else has a better option, but I hope this helps you a little.
