I had given him my old first gen iPad a while back and he used it hapily. But then I gave him my fourth gen iPad and he wanted to give the first gen iPad to his wife. She had already been using it some but he decided to reset it and totally change it over to her. When he did this, he discovered that many of the apps no longer had an equivalent that would work with the first gen iPad any longer. If the user is sighted, then you can find a basic Windows computer or Android tablet for cheap, or at least an iPad 3 or 4. The iPad 1, with iOS5, is technically able to do web browsing, but it also lacks features and I have no idea if it will be secure or not (such as for online banking or other secure tasks). Finally, many apps won't work on such an old operating system. Sure, you can find plenty that will, but most of the newer and more popular ones won't.
