It's probably obvious to everyone else, but I find time zone calculations to always be strangely confusing to me. If you're going to change the time zone when setting an appointment make sure you put in the time for the time zone you're setting it to. If the appointment is 8AM Pacific and 10AM Central then make sure you enter 8AM if you're going to be setting the time zone to Pacific.

When I worked for a small international company, where I traveled a lot and people from all over the world were setting up teleconferences, I got into the habit of just always using UTC and then letting my phone or computer figure out the rest. The trick is still knowing what time zone the person setting up the meeting is using.

In iOS 8, this type of complexity is no longer necessary. When adding an event,
there is now a timezone field at the start time. Select the timezone of the
event and Apple Calendar will do the appropriate calculations. In fact, I
schedule flights with different timezones for departure and arrival times
(start and end), and Calendar automatically calculates properly.

You've probably already figured this out, and it's been a while since I've
taken my iPhone across time zones where I've had to worry about calendar
events, but here's what I think you need to do.

If an event is scheduled for 8AM Pacific or 10AM Central, and you're currently
in the Central time zone then schedule the event for 10AM. Once you show up in
the Pacific time zone, your phone should reset itself and the appointment
should be scheduled at 8AM local time.

Note I usually schedule events in Google Calendar or subscribe to a conferences
ical calendar, but I always check to see if the time zones have sorted
themselves out when I get to the event.

No. All you need to do is make sure your phone time indicates the current local
time on the day in question. So, if it's 6pm local time and your phone tells
you it is 6pm phone time, you're good to go. Your phone will pull the local
time from the cell tower, I believe.

Thanks. I saw a reference to automatic time zone updating in the time/date
settings. Would it make a difference if this was turned on?
Would it adversely affect my appointments?

Schedule the appointment for 8 am if it's an 8am appointment. Your
phone's time will adjust to the local time when you're on the ground,
and it will see the 8 am scheduled 8 am appointment at the local time, 8 am.

Subject: Scheduling events in multiple time zones

Greetings all. I will be going to the CSUN conference in March. I want
to schedule some of the sessions and other events in either the native
calendar or Fantastical 2 but I have some questions about the multiple
time zones. I live in Central time but the events of course would be
in Pacific. How would I do this? Do I need to schedule in PST
specifically when making the appointment, or do I schedule in Central
and let the iPhone's clock adjust the time zones? As of yet I haven't
run into this issue before with the calendar, and don't want an
appointment that I set for an 8am start to actually occur at 6am when
I'm in California. Using an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.3.

Thanks all,
Wayne Merritt
