I don't know if this is a glitch or not, as I'm not sure what the intention would be if it was done on purpose. I do not pretend it's a slate. That option is extremely confusing for me. In tabletop mode, I simply flip my iPod so that the screen is facing me, then flip it back to tabletop mode, and this sets the orientation so that dots 1-2-3 are on the left, and dots 4-5-6 are on the right. For screen-away mode, I always find that it orients with the home button on the right.
