No,theApple Watch requires a connection to the iPhone. All things like
notifications and so on only work when a phone is paired with the watch. They
did say the watch has 8 Gb of memory and some of that can be used to store
music so it may be possible to use the watch without a phone to play music or a
book by itself, but you certainly won’t get text messages, emails, other
notifications or phone calls without the iPhone. At this point the Apple Watch
is meant to be a companion device for the iPhone and not a stand-alone device.

and is it not true that you have to have the watch paired with the phone
meaning you have to have your phone close by? the issue with this for us is
that my room mate and I share the phone and she takes it to work with her once
a wek. Well if either of us gets the watch, will it no longer work with the
phone out of range?
