Hello everyone. I use a Brailliant BI 40 braille display with my IPhone 5S and
IOS 8.2. I don’t have any issues reading but when I write, sometimes my display
just locks up. I can sometimes wait for a couple of seconds and it frees up.
Howevr, other times it won’t free and I have to either reboot everything or
reestablish the pairing. I’ve reported this to Apple Accessibility and have
done numerous tests with them. However, Apple, as far as I’m concerned has not
taken ownership of this issue. Has anyone else had issues with their braille
displays or with Apple refusing to take ownership?

Thanks so much.

Paul

Subject: Re: Problem Running Braille Display with iOS 8.2

Hi,

The problem is that Quick Nav is on by default. That causes this problem. You
need to turn Quick Nav off. in iOS 8.2, the only way to do that is to press the
left and right arrow keys together on a Bluetooth keyboard. Fortunately, in iOS
8.3, you’ll also be able to do it by pressing Space with Q on a braille display.

Best,

Anna

I'm not sure that having automatic braille translation on or off would solve
my issue. What the issue is, is when I'm in the now reading tab and have a
braille file loaded, and I press r to get to the reading window, it actually
enters an r, as if it's in a document. And it used to not do that, it used to
go directly to the reading window. Therefore, I can never get back to the place
that I was at, because I have to actually dot 4-chord to the Reading window,
thereby having to start all the way at the beginning. This is the same for and,
next, and P, previous buttons. It enters the actual letters, and I don't know
how to fix that, unless an update to the Bard mobile app is in order.

Hi,

Automatic braille translation doesn’t conflict with BARD if you switch braille
input to 8-dot while you’re using the app. This is a good idea anyway, since
then each letter you type is seen as a letter rather than a word. The only
problem is that Quick Nav is on by default, and in iOS 8.2, you need a
Bluetooth keyboard to turn off Quick Nav.

But automatic Braille translation messes with the BARD navigation keys,
especially when reading a .brf file, as it thinks you're trying to write a
word. Is there anyway around this? I want my navigation commands back. :-)

Hi Alan,

It sounds like your friend has automatic braille translation turned off. When
she starts typing a word, it goes into a buffer, as indicated by the full
braille cells at either end of the display. When she presses Space or dots
4-5-chord, the word will be entered into the text, and the full braille cells
will disappear.

Another option is to turn off automatic braille translation. Then text is
translated automatically a couple of seconds after you type it, regardless of
whether you’ve pressed Space or dots 4-5-chord. The only problem with that is
that if you stop in the middle of a word to think about something, the part
that you’ve already typed gets back-translated, which can cause problems. For
that reason, I leave automatic braille translation turned off.

HTH,

Anna

I have another question for my friend running iOS 8.2 on an iPhone 6. Are there
new commands to operate a braille display when running iOS8.2? Hers locks up as
soon as she begins to enter text, showing a full cell at either end of the
braille display.

Thanks in advance.
