The same thing happened to me. In order to download I had to do a combination flick and slide motion which eventually brought up what I would have been used to seeing if things would have been normal. This isn't intuitive, because a person would've had to think to try this in order to get the update process started, which shouldn't have been necessary when it wasn't before.

When doing previous updates I've been able to flick over to the Download button and double-tap it, but I got the bong just as you did. I exited the screen, came back in and found the download button, which VoiceOver said was dimmed, but I persevered and was able to start the update, sort of by gosh and by golly, and eventually get it done.
