There are disadvantages in using a VPN if all you want to do is watch popular TV services. VPNs encrypt the traffic and add an additional point before they reach you, so they can have speed implications. Also, they need to be logged into. Apple TV doesn't support them either so you'll need to either set up the VPN at the router level, or use alternative methods. Most people will be better off using a service that intercepts DNS requests, which have none of these disadvantages. They'll only work with the popular services though, so for complete access, it's ideal to have access to both a DNS interception service and VPN.
