I don't think Russ meant to say he couldn't play a book with his iPad in Airplane mode, but apparently in earlier versions of audible the app didn't constantly tell you that you were in Airplane mode and should enable WiFi. I personally don't see the point in turning on Airplane mode to save battery life, the iPad has very good battery life as it is and I certainly would find it bothersome if I had to turn it off every time I wanted to do anything which involved a data connection, but of course that is everybody's choice.
