You are, and since you're not swiping to the Prev button, you might be
hitting that explore by touch focus button in IOS 8. try doing a flick
left and a flick right to get back to the Prev button and double tap.
See if that fixes your issue. This is the work around I used in IOS 8,
but it isn't necessary in IOS 9, since that focus bug has been fixed.

I've found this bug to be fixed in IOS 9.
Also, I think the way the Prev and Next button are supposed to work is that the
Mail app remembers what direction you're moving in, so the Prev and Next button
will take you to the next or previous message in that direction. This may be
the opposite of what you're expecting. I don't notice it now, but it seems that
when my iPhone was new to me, this would always confuse me a bit. IMHO, this
wouldn't be a bug if this is how it's supposed to work.
