What Alex suggests should work fine and yes, the focus jumping to the top is a 
bug but there is always hope that when iOS 9.1 comes out in 2 or 3 weeks that 
it will be fixed.

Possibly deleting is the culprit. Try using the edit option instead; hit the 
edit button, then do the swiping left thing to start at the bottom. Double tap 
the messages to delete, then use the delete button to get rid of them all. As I 
said, I've never tried this because I can't see the benefit of reading my mail 
from oldest to newest.
