Gmail uses IMAP which means it simply syncs whichever devie you use it on to your online account and you can do this with 100 devices if you like, phones, computers, tablets etc. My guess is that your friend is not entering something correctly, maybe he or she is missing something with the password, all it takes is one mistake like a lower case letter instead of an upper case letter or vice versa and it won't work. Also, in case he or she has 2-step verification turned on this would require additional verification before it works.
